Time Just Happens

Time just happens. Good times. Bad times.

We mark our time with events- milestones we call them- birth, first walk, kindergarten, high school, college, wedding, childbirth, job, kid’s events, anniversary, celebrations, retirement, death.

How can we be so perfunctory, so cavalier, so uncaring.

Read the obituaries (or don’t, not much wisdom there)

The hollow affirmations of a life well-lived, a memory cherished.

When you are there, you are there, in some capacity.

When you are gone, perhaps you leave a hole in someone’s heart, but in the big picture, another grain of sand has washed away.

You may be in heaven or hell or reincarnated as a hippopotamus, no one knows, no one cares.

Look at the world around you. Same old chaos. Just the same wolf in the same sheep’s clothing.

Wars, poverty, space stations. Ice storms, fallen stars, rising stars, global pandemics.

A global climate change summit to save the planet for future generations as present generations struggle with hunger, disease, exploitation and death.

The same inexplicable mixture of goodhearted intentions and profit oriented decisions.

Sometimes you have to laugh at this ludicrous world, sometimes you scream in frustration, most of the time you accept with resignation the bleak reality of it all.

We think of time in linear terms. We do not know that there is a continuum, we imagine there is.

We hope that history is relevant. Because if history is relevant, then so are we.

In the big picture, time is amazing.
Millions of years of evolution, dinosaurs, wandering tribes, settlements, trade, wars, territory, boundaries, innovation, artificial intelligence, space travel.

In the little picture there are the little lives with their little moments of happiness, exhilaration, celebration. There is dance and there is music, there is nirvana.

We do not give up. There is a spirit there, that helps us survive, that gives us glimpses of joy.
